Uploading STL Files for Instant Estimates

How to upload STL files and get automatic dimension analysis and volume-based cost estimates.

STLuploadfile uploaddimensionsvolume

Upload an STL file to the calculator and Printforge automatically reads the model dimensions, calculates volume, and estimates material usage.

How It Works

When you upload an STL file (binary or ASCII format), Printforge parses the triangle mesh to determine:

  • Bounding box dimensions — width, depth, and height in millimetres
  • Mesh volume — the total volume of the solid model
  • Estimated weight — volume × material density × infill factor

These values automatically populate the calculator fields, so you get an instant cost estimate without measuring anything manually.

Uploading

On the Calculator page, use the upload panel at the top of the page. Drag and drop your STL file, or click to browse. The file is processed entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server. Maximum file size is 50 MB.

Accuracy Notes

STL-based estimates are approximate because they don't account for supports, infill patterns, or slicer-specific settings. For precise calculations, use a G-code file instead (your slicer has already calculated the exact filament usage). STL estimates are great for quick quotes where you haven't sliced the model yet.

Using Dimensions in Quotes

When you click "Create Quote" from the calculator, the STL dimensions are automatically included in the quote line item description. This gives your clients a clear reference for what they're paying for.
